Oyetola, others to discuss green ports, dockworkers’ welfare at SCAN 2026 event

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, alongside key maritime stakeholders, is expected to converge on Apapa, Lagos, for the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day.

 

The event, scheduled for June 4 at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, will focus on improving dockworkers’ welfare and promoting environmentally sustainable port operations.

 

Other expected participants include former Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) President-General, Adewale Adeyanju, and President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS), Aminu Umar.

 

With the theme “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers,” the forum is expected to drive discussions on eco-friendly port operations, efficiency-enhancing technologies, and improved working conditions for dockworkers.

 

In a statement jointly signed by SCAN President, Moses Ebosele, and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Yusuf Babalola, the association said the initiative aligns Nigeria’s maritime sector with global environmental standards.

 

According to SCAN, the annual Dockworkers’ Day provides a platform to recognise the contributions of dockworkers to the nation’s economy while addressing emerging operational and environmental challenges in the sector.

 

“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement read.

 

The association also stressed the need for continuous skills development as global shipping shifts towards green and technology-driven operations.

 

Umar is expected to deliver the keynote address, while Adeyanju will chair the occasion.

 

Goodwill messages are also expected from the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, among others.
