PDP adopts Sandy Onor as sole presidential candidate for 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has adopted Senator Sandy Onor as its sole consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The adoption was announced on Tuesday in Abuja during a party gathering described as a show of unity aimed at repositioning the opposition ahead of the next election cycle.

Chairman of the Presidential Primary Election Committee, Dr. Samuel Ortom, formally declared Onor as the consensus candidate following consultations with party stakeholders across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“Having conducted consultations across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, I am pleased to formally announce that we have adopted Professor Sandy Onor as the consensus candidate of our great party for the 2027 presidential election,” Ortom said.

The motion was thereafter put to voice vote and adopted by delegates.

PDP National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman, said the decision reflected a collective agreement within the party structure, adding that the party had resolved its internal disputes.

“We are here for endorsement because we have only one person aspiring to the office of President in 2027,” he said.

He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its role in monitoring party processes.

In his acceptance speech, Onor said the PDP had overcome its internal crises and was now repositioned as a united political force.

“Today, we have reclaimed our party, the legacy party, the Peoples Democratic Party. Today, we have a leadership that is united, purposeful and visionary,” he said.

He added that the party remained the strongest opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Onor also said his administration would prioritise rural development and poverty reduction as part of efforts to tackle insecurity.

“We cannot be poor in the midst of so much. Insecurity is fundamentally a function of rural poverty,” he said.

He called for stronger local government administration and improved grassroots funding to address unemployment and insecurity.

The PDP candidate also dismissed claims of division within the party, insisting there was only one legitimate PDP and that the party had fully stabilised ahead of 2027.
