Ilorin Emirate unveils plans for 2026 Grand Durbar celebration

The Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee has unveiled cultural, security and economic plans for the 2026 Ilorin Emirate Grand Durbar Celebration, promising a world-class event aimed at showcasing the heritage and diversity of the ancient emirate.

Chairman of the committee, Engr. Suleiman Alapansanpa, disclosed on Monday that the 2026 Durbar would hold on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Kwara Baseball Park, Adewole, Ilorin.

He said the theme of this year’s celebration, “Prosperity in Diversity,” reflects the historical coexistence of different ethnic and cultural groups within the Ilorin Emirate.

According to him, Ilorin has remained a symbol of unity where Fulani, Yoruba, Nupe, Baruba, Hausa, Kanuri, Gobirawa and other communities have continued to coexist peacefully while contributing to the growth of the city.

“The theme captures the very essence of Ilorin itself. For centuries, Ilorin has stood as a remarkable meeting point of civilisations, cultures, languages, scholarship, and commerce,” Alapansanpa said.

“In a world increasingly confronted by division, intolerance and social fragmentation, Ilorin continues to offer a timeless example of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and shared destiny,” he added.

The committee chairman revealed that over 500 horses would participate in the grand procession, describing equestrian displays as one of the major attractions of the annual cultural event.

On security arrangements, Alapansanpa assured residents and visitors that adequate measures had been put in place in collaboration with security agencies.

“We understand the current situation in the country. We want to tighten security. We have engaged security agencies including the Army, Police, NSCDC and others,” he said.

He also disclosed that Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras would be installed at strategic locations to strengthen surveillance and crowd control.

“There would be CCTV cameras mounted at strategic locations, and there will be no room for politics there,” he stated.

Alapansanpa stressed that the palace and the Durbar institution would remain non-partisan, noting that the event belongs to all sons and daughters of Ilorin irrespective of political or religious affiliations.

As part of efforts to preserve the emirate’s heritage, the committee announced the creation of a Directorate of Storytelling, Digital Media and Cultural Documentation to digitally archive Ilorin’s history and traditions.

The initiative, according to him, would focus on documentary storytelling, historical interpretation, digital archiving and educational content to connect younger generations and global audiences with the cultural heritage of the emirate.

“This effort is not about replacing tradition with technology. It is about using modern tools in service of preservation, education and cultural continuity,” he said.

The committee also unveiled the Ilorin Durbar Vendor Fair and Cultural Market Experience aimed at creating business opportunities for artisans, creatives, food vendors, fashion brands and entrepreneurs.

Alapansanpa said the initiative would boost tourism, local commerce, hospitality and youth entrepreneurship while strengthening Ilorin’s profile as a cultural destination.

“We believe culture should not only be preserved; it should also create prosperity for the people,” he said.

He added that organisers had already registered 77 households as part of preparations for the celebration.

The Ilorin Emirate Grand Durbar is an annual royal and cultural event held two days after Eid-al-Adha, featuring a procession led by the Emir of Ilorin alongside horse riders, traditional musicians and residents in colourful traditional attire.
