The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party loyal to Julius Abure has commenced the distribution of free expression of interest and nomination forms to party members and intending aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The forms cover governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and House of Assembly positions.
State Labour Party Chairman, Alexander Ombugu, disclosed this during a press briefing at the party secretariat in Lafia.
Ombugu said the decision to provide the forms free of charge was aimed at easing the financial burden on aspirants amid prevailing economic challenges.
According to him, the move is also intended to give interested members the opportunity to contest elective positions regardless of their financial capacity.
“I have the mandate which has been given to us, a mandate to fill in our candidates and we are doing our best to do what the national chairman said to us. So with me, I will present these forms free of charge to all our aspirants without them paying any money,” he said.
He noted that while many political parties sell nomination forms at high costs, the Labour Party chose an alternative approach.
“We are aware that many political parties put their expression of interest and nomination forms at a higher price. But the Labour Party belongs to the people. It is a party of all, that is why our logo indicates Papa, Mama and Pikin,” Ombugu added.
The party chairman urged interested politicians to obtain and submit their forms within timelines stipulated by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He also announced dates for the party primaries.
“May 27 is for the Governorship and House of Assembly primaries, while May 29 is for the Senate and House of Representatives primaries,” he said.
Ombugu further disclosed that the party would conduct its primary election on May 25 to select a candidate for the Nasarawa North Senatorial by-election scheduled for June 20 following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
Speaking during the briefing, Labour Party governorship aspirant, Ibrahim Afaka, pledged to tackle unemployment and insecurity if elected governor in 2027.
Afaka also criticised the performance of the ruling All Progressives Congress administration in the state.
The Labour Party has remained divided following a prolonged leadership dispute between the Julius Abure-led faction and supporters of former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman.
