The member representing Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mai Rigar Fata, who represents Gwale Local Government Area, home to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, was formally received into the party on Thursday by former Kano State governor and NDC leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Maitama residence in Abuja.
Kwankwaso described the development as a boost to the party’s grassroots strength in Kano State.
The lawmaker was first elected into the Assembly in 2023 under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform before later joining the APC alongside Governor Yusuf.
His defection comes after he failed to secure the APC ticket to seek re-election to the Assembly.
Also received into the party were former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government, Hon. Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, and Malam Mahadi Isa Umar.
The development comes hours after a Federal High Court ruling on Thursday which widened opportunities for political defections previously restricted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reacting to the court ruling, spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, said the APC could witness mass defections in the coming months.
