In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku clarified that he travelled to Marrakech to preside over a wedding ceremony, not for political activities.
Shaibu said the former vice president chaired the wedding of Cherina and Muna Okey Ezeibe, stressing that the event was rooted in long-standing personal relationships.
According to him, Atiku’s presence at the ceremony was based on friendship between the families involved, particularly his close bond with the groom’s father, Mr Okey Ezeibe.
“Marriage is a sacred institution built on love, sacrifice, patience, and mutual respect,” Atiku was quoted as saying while officiating the ceremony, where he also prayed for the couple’s happiness and prosperity.
The wedding, held in Marrakech, was attended by dignitaries and close associates from across Africa, including the bride’s father, Mr Lassina Zerbo, a former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso.
Shaibu described the gathering as a celebration of African unity and cross-border friendship, saying it brought together respected families and reinforced shared cultural ties.
He maintained that reports suggesting political implications for the visit were unfounded, insisting that Atiku’s trip was strictly personal.
