Opposition Coalition Gains Momentum as NNPP Spokesman Ladipo Johnson Dumps Party for NDC

The spokesman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Mr. Ladipo Johnson, has officially resigned from the party and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing the urgent need for a broader opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 political contest.

Johnson disclosed this in a resignation letter addressed to the NNPP ward chairman in Shitta Ogunlana, Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The former NNPP chieftain said his decision was driven by ongoing political developments in the country and the growing necessity for opposition forces to unite under a stronger national platform.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the party with immediate effect,” he stated.

Johnson expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership for the opportunity to serve in key national positions, including National Auditor and National Publicity Secretary.

According to him, serving on the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) was both impactful and rewarding.

“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I remain grateful to my colleagues on the NWC for their cooperation, commitment and shared vision throughout my time in office,” he added.

He further noted that the country’s current political atmosphere demands a strategic realignment among opposition parties in order to build a more formidable front capable of addressing national challenges.

“This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition,” Johnson said.

“I believe my political journey at this point must focus on fostering unity and strengthening collective efforts in the overall interest of Nigerians.”

Johnson’s defection comes amid increasing political movements into the NDC, following recent reports that prominent opposition figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have also aligned with the emerging coalition platform.
