Kwankwaso Meets NDC Leaders in Abuja Amid 2027 Political Realignments

Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, on Monday hosted leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja, in what appears to be part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among those received at his residence was Mohammed Bakin, the NDC National Vice-Chairman (North-West), alongside other party chieftains.

Sources within the Kwankwasiyya movement disclosed that the NDC delegation used the visit to court Kwankwaso to join the party’s platform as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.

The meeting comes amid growing speculation over a possible alliance involving Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, with discussions reportedly centred on a joint ticket.

Further fuelling the talks, supporters of both politicians recently launched the “OK Movement”, aimed at galvanising grassroots support nationwide.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where Kwankwaso is a prominent figure, is grappling with an internal leadership crisis that could affect its readiness for the 2027 elections.

The crisis has escalated to the courts, with the Supreme Court of Nigeria reserving judgment in a suit involving the faction led by David Mark and another led by Nafiu Bala over the party’s leadership.

In a related development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed May 30, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit membership registers and nominate candidates for the 2027 polls.

However, opposition parties, including the ADC, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have called for an extension of the timetable, arguing that the current schedule may put them at a disadvantage.
