The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group responded to a distress call over an ongoing robbery operation in the area.
According to the Army, the responding soldiers came under heavy fire from the fleeing suspects, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
The Acting Army spokesperson, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, said the situation was tense and rapidly evolving as troops engaged the criminals in a bid to protect residents and restore order.
“In the course of the exchange, Mr. Jamiu was unfortunately caught in the crossfire and sustained fatal injuries,” Odunola stated.
He added that despite efforts to secure the area and save lives, the corps member later succumbed to his injuries.
The Army noted that the remains of the deceased have been handed over to the appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Odunola further disclosed that a full investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that the process would be thorough and transparent.
“We are committed to accountability, and findings of the investigation will be made public in due course,” he said.
The Guards Brigade leadership, alongside officers and men, expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all those affected by the unfortunate incident.
The Army also reiterated its commitment to reviewing its operational procedures to enhance civilian safety while continuing its fight against criminal elements across the country.
