Moro faults ADC, questions call for INEC chairman’s removal

Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its demand for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Moro warned that such calls could heighten political tension in the country.

He noted that demands for the resignation of electoral officials are not new in Nigeria’s political history and should not be seen as a solution to electoral disputes.

Moro questioned the implications of removing the INEC chairman, asking who would oversee the 2027 general elections if the electoral body is deemed compromised.

He also criticised what he described as the continuous escalation of political tension through protests, pointing out that recent demonstrations have largely been driven by the ADC despite the presence of multiple political parties in the country.

According to him, political actors should focus on strengthening their parties and pursuing legal processes rather than resorting to street protests.

The Senate Minority Leader further argued that internal disputes within the ADC are already before the courts, and urged stakeholders to allow due process to take its course.

His remarks come amid an ongoing dispute between the opposition party and INEC over leadership issues within the ADC and broader concerns ahead of the 2027 elections.
