Buhari’s son joins 2027 race, declares for House of Reps seat

Yusuf Buhari, son of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated April 3, 2026, Yusuf expressed interest in representing the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“With all respect, I am extremely delighted to… inform you of my intention to contest… as my contribution to ensure good and qualitative leadership,” he wrote.

He pledged to focus on infrastructure and human capital development, seeking support from party stakeholders to actualise his ambition.

“Your support will help my ambition to succeed… to bring infrastructural development as well as human capital development to the people of this constituency,” the letter added.

The development was confirmed by former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, who said the decision followed wide consultations.

Yusuf’s declaration comes shortly after APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area endorsed him as their preferred candidate for the constituency.

The endorsement was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by party leaders and political appointees, where the council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, described the move as a collective decision.

He said Yusuf’s candidacy was backed by his perceived capacity and acceptance within the party.

The meeting also reaffirmed support for President Bola Tinubu and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, as APC’s standard-bearers for the 2027 elections.

Yusuf Buhari’s entry into the race signals a growing wave of early political mobilisation ahead of the next general elections, particularly within the ruling party.
