FG issues ultimatum to maritime agencies on performance

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to heads of agencies under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, demanding strict accountability and measurable results in line with its performance-driven agenda.

 

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, gave the directive on Thursday during the signing of performance bonds with heads of maritime agencies at a Ministerial Management Retreat in Lagos.

 

The retreat, held alongside the ministry’s first-quarter 2026 stakeholders’ engagement, focused on aligning policy execution with national development goals.

 

“Let me emphasise that all departments and agencies under the ministry must remain firmly focused on delivering tangible results,” Oyetola said.

 

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola, the minister described the performance bonds as binding commitments that would be closely monitored and rigorously evaluated.

 

“These are not ceremonial documents. They are binding commitments. Accountability will not be optional,” he stated.

 

Oyetola stressed the need for data-driven decision-making, as well as robust monitoring and evaluation systems across all agencies.

 

“At the institutional level, we must remain disciplined and accountable. Every department and agency must deliver measurable outcomes,” he added.

 

He noted that the retreat was designed to strengthen synergy between policy formulation, implementation, and stakeholder expectations.

 

“The integration of this engagement enables us to listen, reflect, and recalibrate,” he said.

 

Agencies affected by the directive include the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Shippers’ Council, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Maritime Academy of Nigeria, and the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN).
