Tension in Ibadan as Oyo Govt Moves to Crown APC Aspirant Alli as Oba

Tension is mounting in Ibadan, Oyo State, following plans by the state government to install Senator Sharafadeen Alli, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, as a beaded crown-wearing Oba.

The development was made public on Thursday through a letter signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, and addressed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

In the letter dated March 26, 2026, the commissioner described the proposed coronation as long overdue.

Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, was listed among high chiefs to be installed as Obas. Others include High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin and High Chief Kola Babalola.

The coronation ceremony has been scheduled for April 3, 2026, and is expected to take place at Mapo Hall, Ibadan.

However, the announcement has sparked widespread reactions, particularly among political stakeholders, with debates intensifying over its possible implications.

While some observers view the move as a routine traditional elevation, others suspect it may be politically motivated, potentially aimed at influencing Alli’s governorship ambition.

Despite the concerns, opinions remain divided on whether the coronation would affect his eligibility to contest.

An Ibadan indigene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, maintained that there is no legal barrier preventing Alli from pursuing his governorship ambition even if he accepts the traditional title.

“It is a matter of law. The law does not stop him from aspiring to be governor. He can even reject the beaded crown. The current Olubadan initially rejected it before accepting it later,” the source said.

As discussions continue, the development has added a new dimension to the political landscape in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
