The rift, which has further complicated ongoing reconciliation efforts, centres on opposing positions held by two dominant blocs within the party.
The camp led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has firmly rejected any support for Tinubu, who is expected to seek re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In contrast, a rival faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is reportedly backing Tinubu’s second-term bid, deepening internal disagreements ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled for March 29 in Abuja.
The convention, being organised by the National Caretaker Committee backed by the Wike camp, is expected to be a critical test of unity within the party.
Despite the growing tension, key party leaders and stakeholders have reiterated their commitment to reconciliation.
Prominent figures, including PDP chieftain Chief Olabode George and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, stressed that efforts to resolve internal disputes would continue, with the aim of ensuring the party remains competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“There is no going back on reconciliation,” the leaders said, expressing confidence that the PDP would overcome its challenges and successfully field candidates in the forthcoming polls.
Meanwhile, PDP stakeholders in Kwara State have also declared their intention to participate in the Abuja convention, signalling support for efforts to stabilise the party amid the ongoing crisis.
