Tiv leaders raise alarm over fresh security threats in Southern Taraba

The President General of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, TCSA, James Chihi Bakah, alongside the Forum of Tiv Political Appointees, have raised concerns over emerging threats circulating online, alleging that attackers may be regrouping to target communities including Ananum, Tor-Damisa, Peva, and Kofai Amadu, in Donga and Takum local government od Taraba state.

Briefing journalists on Thursday in Jalingo, the groups commended recent security deployments to Tiv communities in Southern Taraba, while raising concerns over emerging threats in the area.

Bakah said the Tiv people welcomed the intervention of the Taraba state government led by governor Agbu Kefas, noting that the presence of security personnel had begun to restore calm in previously volatile communities.

According to him, the deployment has stopped further attacks and renewed confidence among residents who had lived in fear for months.

“Some areas that were previously tense are now experiencing relative calm,” he said.

The group also praised Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as the armed forces, including the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force, for their swift response to reported threats in Tiv communities. They noted that the intervention helped prevent a wider crisis.

Bakah warned that without the timely action of the state government and security agencies, the situation could have escalated into violence similar to past incidents in parts of Benue State and Kwara State.

Despite the progress, the Tiv leaders called for sustained and possibly increased security presence in affected communities such as New Gboko, Demevaa, Adu, and Gbundu to prevent a relapse into violence.

They also expressed gratitude to governor Kefas for distributing relief materials to displaced persons in Donga, Abako, and Chanchanji, describing the gesture as a demonstration of responsive leadership.
