FG working on legal frameworks to tackle security challenges — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima says the Federal Government is putting in place legal frameworks to address Nigeria’s security challenges and strengthen the protection of citizens’ rights.

Shettima made this known at the 2026 high-level dialogue of the National Committee for the Implementation of International Humanitarian Law Treaties in Nigeria in Abuja.

He said the administration of President Bola Tinubu is adopting a comprehensive approach to implementing national laws and international treaties to improve security and justice delivery.

The Vice President also commended the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, for driving ongoing legal reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s justice system.

In his remarks, the Attorney-General highlighted key reforms, including the domestication of international humanitarian law treaties, the Anti-Torture Act, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

He added that the government is investing in correctional facilities to meet human rights standards, while also ensuring that security agencies receive training in line with international humanitarian law principles.

Fagbemi further noted Nigeria’s cooperation with the International Criminal Court as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and global justice.

Other speakers at the event emphasised the need to uphold humanitarian law, protect civilians, and embed international standards into Nigeria’s security architecture.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting human rights and ensuring that security operations align with global best practices.
