2027: Ndume says opposition yet to show clear path to unseat Tinubu

Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, has said leading opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi are yet to present a convincing alternative capable of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Ndume expressed confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress will retain power beyond 2027, noting that the opposition has not demonstrated sufficient coordination or introduced fresh ideas to challenge the current administration.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday, the lawmaker said he was not unsettled by current political movements within opposition circles.

According to him, “I am not worried because nobody is bringing anything different to the table. The names being mentioned are the same — Tinubu, Atiku, Amaechi and Obi — but I have not seen anything new they have presented politically.”

Ndume also observed that internal divisions within the African Democratic Congress could weaken its ability to mount a serious challenge.

He said although President Tinubu remains firmly in control politically, those positioning themselves within the opposition appear more focused on personal ambition than building a united front.

“At first, I had confidence in the coalition talk, but when you look closely, many are more interested in power for themselves. That reduces the seriousness,” he said.

The senator, however, cautioned against underestimating opposition figures, stressing that political history has shown that seemingly weak alliances can become formidable.

He recalled how the former ruling People’s Democratic Party initially dismissed the APC before it eventually lost power in 2015.

“You cannot completely dismiss any political opponent. PDP once underestimated APC, yet APC came together and succeeded after several attempts by Buhari,” Ndume added.
