The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the full restoration of train services on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor following Monday’s operational disruption.
Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this in a post on X on Wednesday, assuring passengers of improved safety and operational standards.
“Following the incident on Monday, March 16, 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
“Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys,” he said.
Opeifa also confirmed the successful resumption of the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), including the return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, signalling a return to normal operations along the route.
The disruption occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station on the Abuja–Kaduna rail line, involving train KA2, which departed Rigasa and stopped at Jere before proceeding.
After leaving Jere, where an additional rear locomotive had been attached, the locomotive reportedly became detached while the train was in motion, rolled forward, and collided with the rear of the train.
The train was conveying 429 passengers, along with crew members and security personnel. No fatalities were recorded, though some passengers sustained injuries and received medical attention.
Despite the incident, the train completed its journey to Idu Station in Abuja, and authorities say measures have since been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
