President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees seeking elective offices in the 2027 general election to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and heads of federal agencies and parastatals, among others.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
According to the circular, the decision aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for party primaries.
The circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana.
It stated that all affected appointees must submit their formal resignation letters through the SGF’s office not later than the stipulated deadline.
“The directive applies to all categories of presidential political appointees who wish to participate in the forthcoming party primaries or seek nomination for any elective office,” the circular noted.
Tinubu said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.
He urged all affected officials to comply strictly with the directive, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to credible electoral processes and strong democratic institutions.
The development comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, following INEC’s release of the electoral timetable.
