The Edo State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a bullying incident involving students at Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin, following the circulation of a viral video on social media.

The footage shows two students allegedly attacking a fellow pupil, prompting outrage online. While the school has expelled the students involved and the State Ministry of Education has set up a five-member panel to investigate, the police said they would proceed independently, without waiting for a formal complaint from the victim’s parents.

In a statement on Sunday, Police Public Relations Officer Eno Ikoedem said Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika had directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge to conduct a detailed inquiry.

“The Edo State Police Command is aware of the viral video circulating on social media showing a disturbing incident of bullying involving a schoolboy at Igbinedion Secondary School. While the school management has expelled the students involved, a comprehensive investigation will still be carried out,” the statement read.

The police added that anyone found culpable would face legal consequences in line with provisions for juvenile offences and reaffirmed their condemnation of violence and intimidation in schools.

“The Edo State Police Command totally condemns acts of bullying, violence or intimidation among students, and anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” it said.
