IWD: Tinubu celebrates women, says they shape Nigeria’s progress

President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Nigerian women at home and in the diaspora, describing them as central to the country’s development and progress

In a message to mark International Women’s Day 2026 on Sunday, the President said women across different sectors of society continue to demonstrate resilience, courage and determination that sustain the nation.

“Today, on International Women’s Day, I celebrate the women of Nigeria, at home and abroad,” Tinubu said.

“Across our homes, farms, markets, offices, and the halls of leadership, Nigerian women continue to demonstrate strength, courage, and determination that help hold our nation together.”

Tinubu noted that women play critical roles in nation-building as mothers, entrepreneurs, professionals and citizens, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“They are mothers who nurture, entrepreneurs who build, professionals who lead, and citizens who continue to shape the destiny of our country with resilience and dignity,” he said

The President also acknowledged the historical and contemporary contributions of women to Nigeria’s democratic growth and national development.

“Nigeria’s progress has always carried the imprint of women who refused to accept limits placed before them,” he said, adding that from those who fought for democracy to those supporting families and communities daily, their impact remains profound.

Tinubu reiterated the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for women and girls to realise their full potential.

“Our duty as a government and as a society is to continue creating the conditions where every Nigerian girl can learn, every woman can thrive economically, and every voice can contribute to our national development,” he said.

Emphasising their role in national progress, the President added: “When Nigerian women rise, Nigeria rises.”
