Zamfara Governor Hints at Leaving PDP Amid Party Crisis

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has hinted at his intention to seek re-election under a different political platform, as tensions and crises continue to engulf the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

According to sources, Governor Lawal convened an emergency meeting with key stakeholders and members of his cabinet on Friday night at the Rescue Hall in the Government House, Gusau. The meeting, aimed at charting the way forward ahead of the 2027 elections, included the state PDP chairman, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, the Secretary to the State Government, and senior party elders.

A source who spoke to Vanguard disclosed that while some aides and political observers had previously speculated about the governor defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the meeting clarified that no final decision had been made.

“The governor summoned the stakeholders to discuss his next steps, especially following INEC’s timetable indicating that political campaigns would begin in April,” the source said.

Despite the ongoing court validation of the Turaki-led PDP executives in Zamfara, opinions among the stakeholders were divided. Some urged Governor Lawal to remain in PDP to consolidate recent legal victories, while others recommended a defection to APC, noting that all six governors in the North West are members of the ruling party, which could provide strategic leverage.

Yet, another faction suggested that Governor Lawal consider joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pointing to growing public dissatisfaction with APC at the grassroots level, and the potential of ADC as a viable opposition platform.

Sources also revealed that the meeting resolved to conduct further consultations with party members at the ward and local government levels. A strategic committee is expected to be set up to advise the governor, who may make an official announcement following the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

Efforts to get an official comment from the PDP state chapter were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
