Ghana Renames Accra’s International Airport, Dropping ‘Kotoka’
The Ghanaian government has announced that the country’s main airport in Accra will revert to its original name, Accra International Airport, replacing the current designation, Kotoka International Airport.
A statement from the Ministry of Transport explained that the name change will involve updating official documents, statutory instruments where required, airport signage, aviation publications, and digital platforms.
“The government has considered it appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name,” the statement said.
The airport’s original name, Accra International Airport (ACC), has remained the official designation in International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) documents.
The facility was renamed Kotoka International Airport in 1969 to honor Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who was killed during a failed coup attempt in 1967, at a location now forming the airport’s forecourt.
