A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Austin Okai, has raised concerns over the planned power outage in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of Saturday’s area council elections.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had, in a notice posted on its official Facebook page on Friday, announced scheduled maintenance across parts of the nation’s capital.
According to the company, the exercise will affect electricity supply between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in some areas, while other locations will experience outages from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct area council elections across the FCT on Saturday.
Reacting in a Facebook post, Okai questioned the timing of the maintenance, describing it as disturbing.
“Why would AEDC cut power from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during elections?” he queried.
He also expressed concern over alleged reports that telecommunications services might limit internet access in the FCT during the exercise.
“This is deeply troubling and unfair to the voters of the FCT,” he added.
