Police Arrest 30 Suspected Drug Peddlers in Akwa Ibom Crackdown

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have detained no fewer than 30 suspected drug dealers in Akwa Ibom following a series of intelligence-led raids across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this on Monday in Uyo, stating that the operation forms part of an intensified clampdown on dealers of Indian hemp and other prohibited substances.

According to her, at least 20 of the suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations, while others remain in custody.

She explained that the coordinated operations targeted identified flashpoints and criminal hideouts, leading to multiple arrests and the seizure of significant quantities of suspected illicit drugs.

John said the raids were simultaneously executed based on actionable intelligence to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating within the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, she added, has directed that the offensive against drug distribution and trafficking be sustained without pause.

She quoted the commissioner as issuing a stern warning to individuals involved in the illegal drug trade to immediately cease operations or leave the state, stressing that enforcement actions would be intensified.

“The Command will not fold its arms and watch young people being drawn into addiction, criminality and social disorder,” she said, noting that the spread of illicit drugs is closely linked to cultism, armed robbery and other violent crimes.

She further stated that surveillance has been strengthened, intelligence gathering expanded and inter-agency collaboration improved to ensure effective enforcement.

The police spokesperson called on parents, traditional rulers, youth leaders and other community stakeholders to support security agencies with timely and credible information.

She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law, order and public safety across the state.
