Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on his birthday, describing him as a courageous and intellectually gifted leader whose record in public service remains notable despite ongoing political controversies.
In a goodwill message posted on his verified X handle on Monday, Atiku commended El-Rufai’s clarity of purpose and strength of character, saying his contributions to governance stand out.
“Happy Birthday to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai — a man of intellect, courage, and uncommon sagacity. Even amid present political persecution and needless distractions, his record of service and clarity of thought and purpose remain undeniable,” he wrote, while also wishing him peace and divine guidance in the years ahead.
El-Rufai has recently been at the centre of public attention following an attempted arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and separate invitations reportedly extended to him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission.
The former governor, who returned to Nigeria from Egypt last week, had raised allegations against the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, over an alleged plan to procure thallium sulphate from Poland, calling for clarification and transparency.
In a letter addressed to the NSA, El-Rufai described the substance as highly toxic and tightly regulated, requesting details on its intended use, procurement process, supplier identity, quantity, storage plan and regulatory approvals.
He said the request was made in good faith and in the interest of public safety and institutional accountability, noting that copies of the correspondence were forwarded to relevant authorities, including National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
Meanwhile, the Office of the National Security Adviser has reportedly asked El-Rufai to submit evidence supporting his claims to the Department of State Services for investigation.
