Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian leaders and those seeking public office to demonstrate competence and compassion in service before demanding honorific titles such as “His Excellency.”

Speaking on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at a joint meeting of the African Democratic Congress and the Obidient Movement, Obi emphasized that leadership must be rooted in accountability, character and people-focused governance.

Peter Obi said Nigeria needs leaders who are committed to improving citizens’ welfare through investments in security, education, healthcare, youth empowerment and poverty reduction.

He stressed that national progress would only be achieved when political leadership shifts its focus from consumption-driven governance to productive economic policies that create wealth and opportunities.

According to him, public titles should reflect proven conduct and measurable performance rather than mere status.

He said, “Nigeria must be led by leaders who are competent, compassionate, and committed — leaders who prioritise development, security, education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and creating opportunities for our youth.

“Those who aspire to be called honourable must truly act honourably; those who seek to be addressed as ‘His Excellency’ must embody excellence; and those who aim to be distinguished must live distinguished lives.”

Obi also called for unity across political and social divides, urging citizens to work collectively toward building a more accountable and prosperous nation.
