Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the attempted arrest of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing the development as a “national embarrassment” and a violation of the rule of law.
Atiku spoke on Thursday during a solidarity visit to El-Rufai at his Abuja residence, following an incident involving operatives of the Department of State Services.
The attempted arrest reportedly occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, shortly after El-Rufai arrived from Cairo, Egypt, aboard an Egypt Air flight. The development has continued to generate widespread reactions across political and civic circles.
Addressing journalists after the visit, Atiku faulted the manner of the operation, insisting that due process should have been followed.
According to him, “Our society is built on the rule of law. There was no need for El-Rufai to be embarrassed or treated in such a manner. If there were issues, the proper thing would have been to allow him return home and then invite him through lawful channels.
“He has held high offices in this country — as a minister and as a governor — and discharged his responsibilities. Subjecting him to such public embarrassment amounts to embarrassing the entire society.
“We will stand by him and by every law-abiding citizen of Nigeria,” Atiku stated.
Also said to have earlier paid a solidarity visit to El-Rufai is former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in a show of support amid the controversy.
Meanwhile, the incident is reportedly linked to ongoing engagements involving anti-graft authorities, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, though officials are yet to issue a detailed public statement on the matter.
The situation continues to stir debate over security agency conduct and adherence to due process in high-profile cases.
