APC Risks Deep Internal Crisis If Governors Control Congress Structures — Nabena

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has cautioned the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) against allowing serving governors to dominate the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such a move could trigger serious internal conflict.

Nabena, in a statement issued on Wednesday, expressed concern that handing over control of party congress processes to incumbent governors may undermine internal democracy and weaken party unity.

He alleged that nomination forms for the forthcoming congresses are being routed directly to governors, thereby enabling them to determine party officials through selection rather than open and competitive processes.

According to him, sidelining transparent procedures in the conduct of the congresses could create widespread dissatisfaction among party members and spark avoidable crises.

He warned that the development, if not urgently addressed, may lead to a major internal breakdown within the ruling party.

Nabena called on APC elders and key stakeholders to intervene and advise the NWC to reverse any arrangement that concentrates excessive control in the hands of governors.

He stressed that the party leadership must act swiftly to prevent further erosion of confidence among members, noting that APC’s membership strength has significantly declined from its previously claimed figures.

He also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to step in before the nationwide congresses commence, saying early intervention would help preserve internal cohesion and prevent a potential implosion within the party.
