The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven persons died and 70 others were injured in a lone accident involving a commercial trailer on Hadejia Road, Kwanar Danja, Kano State.
Sector Commander Idris Muhammed-Lawal disclosed this in a statement signed by FRSC Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, on Sunday. He said the crash, which occurred at about 8:35 a.m., involved a single DAF trailer (registration number KTG 467 YG) carrying passengers and goods.
“We received a distress call at 8:35 a.m. and dispatched our rescue team immediately. Within five minutes, our personnel were at the scene,” Muhammed-Lawal said.
The FRSC said the accident involved a total of 105 people. Of the injured, 55 males and 15 females sustained various degrees of injuries, while 28 passengers escaped unhurt.
He attributed the cause of the crash to speeding and loss of control, worsened by the hazardous practice of transporting passengers in goods vehicles.
The injured victims were evacuated to four hospitals in Kano:
Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital – 24 victims (17 males, 7 females)
General Hospital, Gezawa – 24 victims (16 males, 8 females)
Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital – 20 victims (all males)
Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa – 7 victims (5 males, 2 females)
Muhammed-Lawal commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against reckless driving, speeding, and illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, stressing that these unsafe practices continue to claim lives.
The FRSC urged all road users to remain safety-conscious and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property.
