Police Arrest Two Over Failed Kidnap Attempt on Edo Highway, Foil Another Attack

The Edo State Police Command has arrested two suspected kidnappers and foiled another attempted abduction along the Auchi–Igarra Highway as part of ongoing operations to curb violent crimes in the state.

The command disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, who said the arrests followed proactive patrols and intelligence-driven operations across Igarra and surrounding communities.

According to the statement, the suspects — Muhammed Muamadu Haru, 35, and Abubakar Muhammed Haruna, 25 — were apprehended on January 28, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. by operatives of the Igarra Area Command at a known criminal flashpoint along the highway.

Police said the duo was identified by a vigilante member as part of a kidnapping syndicate during a joint bush-combing and rescue operation.

“The suspects attempted to flee into the bush upon being recognised but were swiftly intercepted and arrested. Investigation is ongoing,” the statement said.

In a related development, police patrol teams on motorcycle convoy on February 2, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., thwarted another kidnap attempt on the Auchi–Igarra Express Road.

Officers reportedly intercepted three suspected kidnappers who were attempting to barricade the road. The suspects fled into a nearby forest on sighting the patrol team, abandoning items believed to be meant for the operation.

Recovered items include food supplies, mobile phones, jack knives and other personal belongings. Police said bush-combing efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.

Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, assuring residents of sustained operations to dismantle criminal networks across the state.

He urged members of the public to remain alert and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies through the nearest police station or emergency channels.

The command added that recent coordinated operations have led to the arrest of 13 suspected kidnappers and vandals, as well as the rescue of three abducted victims, noting that the crackdown will continue.
