Former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the Ogun State governorship election in 2027.
Sowunmi made the announcement on Tuesday during an interactive Zoom session with his supporters and journalists, stating that persistent development gaps in the state prompted his decision.
According to him, his ambition is anchored on addressing key challenges in security, education, and healthcare, while ensuring that governance benefits every corner of Ogun State.
“As a critical stakeholder who has always contributed to the state’s progress, I believe this is the right time to offer practical solutions and implement the best ideas for Ogun,” Sowunmi said.
He expressed concern over the lack of continuity in policies and programs and lamented that Ogun has not fully leveraged economic opportunities from its proximity to Lagos State.
“We need a governance model that works not just for Oke-Mosan but for every citizen in all nooks and crannies of Ogun,” he said. “It is disheartening that our hospitals, including the Sacred Heart Hospital in Abeokuta, remain underdeveloped. Ogun has the potential to become the healthcare hub of the South-West, but that dream is yet unrealized.”
On the political front, Sowunmi noted the continuing crises in the PDP but disclosed that he is monitoring all parties closely and will soon announce the party under which he will contest.
