Benue Killings: FG Moves to Arraign Yelwata Attack Suspects in Abuja Court

The Federal Government is set to arraign several suspects allegedly involved in the deadly attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State before a Federal High Court in Abuja today.

The suspects are expected to appear before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik following what authorities described as an extensive multi-agency investigation into the incident.

A statement issued on Sunday by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Adviser on Communication and Publicity to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, confirmed that the prosecution is part of ongoing efforts to ensure accountability for the killings.

According to the statement, those to be charged were arrested based on intelligence and operational findings linking them directly to the violent attack on the Benue community.

The AGF’s office said the prosecution is intended to demonstrate government’s resolve to bring perpetrators of mass violence to justice and deter similar acts, regardless of the group or motive involved.

Yelwata community came under heavy attack by suspected gunmen on June 13, 2025, resulting in the deaths of many residents and widespread destruction.

In the aftermath, security authorities, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, launched coordinated cross-border security operations to track down those responsible.

Police authorities later confirmed the arrest of dozens of suspects in connection with attacks across Benue and Plateau states, with a significant number reportedly tied to the Yelwata incident.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property nationwide, assuring that due process will be followed and justice pursued to its logical conclusion.
