The recent attempted coup has reportedly taken the Nigerian military off guard, according to retired Brigadier-General Sani Kukasheka-Usman, former Director of Army Public Relations.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, Usman said the incident underscored the importance of alignment between the military and Nigerian society.
“The military has undergone significant transformation over the past 15 years. Coupled with Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic governance for 26 years, both the armed forces and society were genuinely surprised by the attempt,” he said.
Usman added that the Defence Headquarters had issued a statement, clarifying the matter after thorough investigation. “The military has now established that the incident involved acts of indiscipline, breach of service regulations, and an attempt to undermine democratic governance,” he noted.
According to the retired general, the recent statements from the Director of Defence Information demonstrate a renewed commitment by the military to operate in harmony with societal expectations. “The more informed and enlightened the citizenry, the easier it is for them to participate in governance, and for the military to function in line with democratic principles,” Usman said.
The military’s proactive stance comes amid heightened scrutiny of security agencies following the failed coup, reinforcing the need for discipline and respect for democratic institutions.
