Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has warned social media influencers and political commentators against making disrespectful or inflammatory remarks about Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The warning came amid recent political developments in the state, following Yusuf’s resignation from the NNPP alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor gave the admonition during the distribution of 600 motorcycles to social media practitioners in Kano.
Yusuf cautioned that the misuse of social media platforms to spread insults, misinformation and hate speech could endanger peace and unity in the state.
He described Kwankwaso as a political leader whose contributions to the political and socio-economic development of Kano State are significant and deserving of respect.
The governor stressed that while freedom of expression remains a fundamental right, it must be exercised responsibly, urging commentators to focus on issue-based and constructive political engagement rather than personal attacks.
He further charged beneficiaries of the motorcycles to see the gesture as a responsibility to promote truth, peace and accurate information about government policies and programmes.
According to him, the initiative was aimed at empowering social media practitioners to enhance public awareness and strengthen communication between the government and the people.
