Oyintiloye Seeks Aggressive Public Education on New Tax Reform Law

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called for intensified sensitisation on the newly introduced tax reform laws, saying many Nigerians still lack adequate understanding of the policy.

Oyintiloye, a former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, spoke with newsmen on Sunday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. He noted that poor awareness of the provisions of the law had led to widespread misconceptions and misrepresentation of government’s intentions.

According to him, misinformation about the reform has continued to spread, leaving citizens — including educated Nigerians — uncertain about how their incomes would be affected.

He said: “Many Nigerians are still ignorant of the new tax law. Social media is filled with different explanations, creating confusion among the people.

“The misinformation about the tax law is spreading faster than the true intentions of the law and its benefits. Till this moment, many Nigerians, both literate and illiterate, do not actually know what to believe.”

The APC stalwart added that alleged discrepancies between the bill passed by the National Assembly and the versions published in the official gazette had further fuelled suspicion and distrust.

Oyintiloye maintained that the objective of the reform, particularly as it concerns low-income earners, remained noble, stressing that the policy was designed to ease the burden on vulnerable Nigerians.

He, however, blamed the controversy trailing the law on what he described as slow and inadequate public engagement before its implementation.

The former lawmaker urged agencies responsible for public enlightenment to step up efforts and ensure that accurate information about the reform reaches every segment of society.

He said only sustained and transparent communication would restore public confidence and enable Nigerians to appreciate the benefits of the new tax regime.
