The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, is dead. He passed away on Monday at the age of 75.
A dependable source at the Emir of Ilorin’s palace confirmed the development, describing the late cleric as a pillar of faith and unity in the Ilorin Emirate.
Sheikh Saliu, a native of Ilorin in Kwara State, devoted his lifetime to Islamic scholarship, teaching and community service. His dedication to religious learning and moral guidance earned him widespread respect across northern Nigeria and beyond.
He was appointed the 12th Chief Imam of Ilorin in 1983 and presided over the spiritual affairs of the emirate for more than 40 years. During his tenure, he was noted for his profound knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence, commitment to peaceful coexistence and promotion of tolerance among adherents of different faiths.
Community leaders and residents described his death as a huge loss to the Muslim Ummah and the nation at large, recalling his role in resolving disputes and mentoring generations of clerics.
The Ilorin Emirate Council is expected to announce burial arrangements in line with Islamic rites.
