Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo State, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as a credible platform for responsive governance.
Ihedioha, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April 2024, announced in July 2025 that the ADC would serve as the political home for him and his supporters. He completed his formal registration on Monday at Mbutu Ward in Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
The former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives was issued ADC membership card number 001, in a ceremony presided over by Obinna Opara, ward secretary, and Alex Ahamuefula, ward chairman. The registration was witnessed by party leaders, stakeholders, and community representatives.
Speaking after the registration, Ihedioha said his move to ADC was deliberate, motivated by the party’s commitment to accountability, clear values, and public service.
“Nigeria and Imo State require leadership that prioritises public interest and responsive governance,” he said. “Our people want leadership that listens, serves, and puts the common good above personal interest. I am convinced that the ADC provides a credible platform to pursue these goals.”
National party officials present included Bon Unachukwu, ADC national vice chairman (South-East), Maigari Kasimu, deputy diaspora coordinator, and Uko Nkole, coordinator of the former legislators’ forum.
Unachukwu described Ihedioha’s defection as a significant boost to the party both in the south-east and nationally. James Okoroma, Imo ADC chairman, added that the former governor’s membership would strengthen the party’s position in the state.
