A coalition of political stakeholders in Rivers State has warned members of the House of Assembly to immediately halt the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara or risk being recalled from office.
The group, operating under the banner of the Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance in Rivers, condemned the commencement of impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, describing the move as unlawful and politically motivated.
The House of Assembly had, on Thursday, initiated impeachment proceedings, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct, including alleged spending without legislative approval.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by the coalition’s chairman, Akwu Jonathan, the group accused the lawmakers of abusing their constitutional powers and undermining the will of the people amid the lingering political crisis in the state.
According to the coalition, the impeachment move amounts to a “deliberate attempt to hijack governance through legislative recklessness” and represents a betrayal of public trust.
The group insisted that the Assembly lacks the moral and popular mandate to pursue the impeachment and demanded an immediate termination of the process.
It warned that failure to do so would trigger a statewide recall effort against lawmakers found to be complicit.
“Should the Assembly continue on this unlawful path, the Coalition of Councillorship Candidates for Grassroots Governance will commence a comprehensive recall process against affected members across all constituencies,” the statement said.
“We are fully prepared to mobilise ward by ward and community by community to reclaim the people’s mandate and hold accountable those who have chosen betrayal over representation.”
The development further heightens political tension in Rivers State, as stakeholders continue to trade accusations over control and governance in the state.
