Breaking News: Court grants Malami, wife, son N500m bail over N8.7bn laundering charge

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday granted bail of N500 million each to former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife, Asabe Bashir, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in his ruling, ordered that each of the defendants produce two sureties in like sum. The sureties must own landed property within Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarimpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned the trio on charges bordering on alleged money laundering to the tune of N8,713,923,759.49.

All the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The anti-graft agency further informed the court that properties valued at about N212 billion were allegedly linked to the former Attorney-General.

Recall that the court had on December 30, 2025, ordered the remand of the defendants at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.

The matter was adjourned to a later date for commencement of trial.
