Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has faulted controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his sustained criticism of the recent United States airstrikes targeting suspected ISIS enclaves in Sokoto State.
Adeyanju said Gumi’s reaction to the military operation was unnecessary, insisting that Nigeria must strengthen collaboration with the United States and other allies in the fight against terrorism.
The activist spoke amid growing controversy surrounding the Christmas Day airstrikes reportedly ordered by former US President Donald Trump, which were aimed at ISIS elements operating within Nigerian territory.
Although there have been claims that the operation did not record casualties among the terrorists, Adeyanju questioned Gumi’s persistent condemnation of the mission.
Reacting via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Adeyanju wrote: “If the Donald Trump airstrike against Nigerian ISIS didn’t kill any terrorist, why is Gumi crying? Should he not be happy that all his colleagues are still alive?”
He further queried the cleric’s posture, saying: “Why the tears? Nigeria needs more collaborative efforts with the United States to confront these barbaric terrorists who are terrorising our nation.”
Gumi has consistently criticised foreign military involvement in Nigeria’s security operations and had earlier called on the Federal Government to halt military cooperation with the United States following the airstrikes.
The comments by Adeyanju have reignited debate over foreign military assistance and Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy, especially as security challenges persist across several parts of the country.
