The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims of factionalisation within its ranks, insisting that the party remains united despite the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) refusal to recognise the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).
INEC had declined to upload the list of national officers elected at the PDP’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, citing subsisting court judgments and pending litigation over the party’s leadership.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, and signed by its Secretary, Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the electoral body explained that it could not accord recognition to the officers elected at the convention while the matter remains before the courts. The commission maintained that recognising any leadership group under such circumstances would be improper.
Reacting to INEC’s position, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the party had already appealed the judgment relied upon by the commission and had filed an application for a stay of execution.
In a statement, Ememobong reiterated that there is no faction within the PDP, either in law or in fact.
“The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party reiterates that there is no faction in the PDP,” he said.
“This clarification has become necessary following INEC’s letter explaining its inability to recognise and upload the details of our legitimately elected leadership due to judgments of the Federal High Court.
“These judgments have been appealed, and applications for stay of execution have been filed. The Court of Appeal is expected to hear and determine the matters in due course.”
He further stressed that the party’s recognised organs and administrative structures remain firmly under the control of the Turaki-led NWC.
“The truth remains that the PDP is united, and all legitimate organs of the party are under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN,” the statement added.
