The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, that his bail was revoked over participation in a political event in Kebbi State.
In a statement, the Commission explained that administrative bail is a discretionary temporary release granted pending investigation and arraignment. Malami was offered provisional bail on November 28, 2025, subject to five specific conditions, none of which he has met.
The former minister was scheduled for further interrogation on December 1, 2025. However, he wrote to the Commission on December 4, citing ill health and requesting a deferment, which the EFCC compassionately granted. Malami neither provided medical documentation nor credible proof of his ill-health.
The Commission stated that it invited Malami again on December 8, 2025, for further interrogation and detained him until he fulfils the pending bail conditions.
The EFCC dismissed allegations that it barred the former minister from granting media interviews or participating in political activities. “Such claims are unfounded. The Commission has no interest in the political affiliation of suspects and remains apolitical in all its operations,” the statement said.
The Commission cited a recent example of a former governor and senior ruling party member arraigned for alleged contract fraud, emphasizing that political status does not influence EFCC investigations.
The EFCC advised Malami to focus on meeting the bail conditions he acknowledged and cooperate with investigators, rather than making misleading claims in the media.
