ADC Accuses EFCC of Political Bias in Malami Bail Revocation

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) revocation of bail for former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mallam Abubakar Malami, SAN, as politically motivated rather than a genuine law enforcement action.

In a statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the party, ADC argued that Malami did not violate any of the legal conditions attached to his bail. The party expressed concern that the EFCC’s decision to revoke the bail came shortly after Malami attended a political rally in his home state of Kebbi, giving the impression that the action was aimed at curtailing his political ambitions.

The party reiterated its support for anti-corruption agencies, stressing the importance of holding public officers accountable. However, it warned that selective investigations and the perceived weaponisation of anti-corruption agencies against opposition figures undermines the credibility of Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

“Revoking Malami’s bail only after he attended a political event raises questions about the EFCC’s motives and its impartiality,” the statement read. “No government agency has the constitutional power to suspend political rights or determine where a citizen can engage politically. This selective restriction suggests a deliberate attempt to hinder his political ambition in Kebbi State.”

ADC called on the EFCC to reassess its priorities, citing recent Afrobarometer survey data which ranked the Presidency, police, and National Assembly among the most corrupt institutions in the country. The party demanded the immediate release of Malami on bail without conditions that infringe on his political rights, while affirming his innocence until proven otherwise by a competent court.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said, “Politicising the fight against corruption is itself a major form of corruption, and ADC remains committed to genuine anti-corruption efforts.”
