Kano Community in Panic as Fire Razes Rogo General Hospital

A dawn inferno on Friday gutted major sections of the Rogo General Hospital in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, triggering fear and confusion among patients, staff and residents who rely heavily on the facility for medical care.

Witnesses told Patriotic Insights News that thick smoke billowed from the hospital buildings as flames spread rapidly before firefighters arrived. The fire was said to have been triggered by a fault linked to the hospital’s solar power installation.

Large parts of the hospital — including key sections essential to patient management — were destroyed.

Residents lamented that the incident has left the community vulnerable, as the hospital remains the only general healthcare facility serving the entire local government area.

Amina, a heavily pregnant woman who was inside one of the affected wards, expressed distress over the development.

“I don’t know what to do now. This is where I attend all my antenatal sessions,” she said. “This fire means I will have to travel almost an hour to get to the next hospital. I am in a delicate condition.”

Also speaking, a community elder, Alhaji Sani Shuaibu Rogo, described the situation as dire.

“This place serves the whole local government. We don’t have another general hospital nearby,” he said. “The government must act fast. Any delay will endanger lives.”

Another resident, Hauwa Belli, who rushed her sick child to the facility, watched helplessly as firefighters battled the flames.

“This hospital has saved many lives in this town. Now that major parts are gone, where do we run to? We beg the government to rebuild it immediately,” she pleaded.

Community members and hospital workers have called on the Kano State Government and relevant authorities to commence urgent reconstruction of the destroyed sections and improve safety systems.

They stressed that thousands of residents depend solely on the hospital for healthcare.

At the time of filing this report, officials had yet to release details of casualties or the extent of damage.
