President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested the approval of the National Assembly for the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peacekeeping operation.

The President’s letter, dated December 8, 2025, was read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Tinubu’s request follows a failed coup attempt in Cotonou, which Beninese authorities confirmed was foiled within hours. Nigeria had earlier dispatched military fighter jets to the neighbouring country on Sunday, shortly after coup plotters announced the purported overthrow of President Patrice Talon.

The President said the proposed deployment is aimed at supporting stability, preventing a relapse into unrest, and demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to regional security within the ECOWAS framework.

The National Assembly is expected to consider and process the request before the end of the week.

The development comes amid heightened security coordination across West Africa, following recent political upheavals in parts of the region.
