State Police Key to Ending Insecurity, Says Gani Adams

Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has stated that Nigeria’s security challenges could be effectively addressed within six months if the federal government approves the establishment of state police.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Adams noted that all six geopolitical zones now broadly support the creation of state police.

“For the first time, the six geopolitical zones in the country agree on state police. Even our northern brothers, including governors and traditional rulers, are in support,” he said.

He added, “I believe that if the National Assembly legislates on state police and the President signs it into law, the issue of insecurity in this country will be resolved within six months.”

Adams pointed out that while the Amotekun security network has been operational in the South-West, it lacks the sophisticated weaponry required to tackle terrorist groups effectively.

Responding to concerns that state police could be misused for political purposes, Adams stressed that the protection of lives must remain the priority.

“I fully support the southern governors who have declared state police as a non-negotiable element of true federalism and grassroots security,” he said. “State police is a crucial part of true federalism. Given the current security situation, anyone who cares about Nigeria cannot oppose it.”

The Aare Ona Kakanfo also commended South-West governors for their early advocacy on the matter, highlighting their proactive role in the national debate on security.
