The federal government has unfolded an ambitious plan to revitalise 8,000 primary health centres (PHCs) and expand national immunisation coverage under its 2024–2028 medium-term framework.
Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Salako, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Salako said the new framework aligns with the administration’s drive to strengthen social welfare systems and widen access to quality healthcare across the federation.
He explained that over 4,000 PHCs currently undergoing upgrades will be sustained, while an additional 8,000 facilities will be revitalised to enhance delivery of essential health services.
According to him, the renewed commitment to the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) will accelerate the nationwide overhaul of PHCs and reinforce primary healthcare as the bedrock of Nigeria’s health sector.
“The President is fully committed to human capital development as articulated in the 2024–2028 medium-term framework,” he said. “This means the revitalised 4,000 PHCs and the 8,000 additional ones coming on stream can be effectively sustained.”
The minister added that FEC’s approval ensures continuity of major immunisation programmes introduced by the Tinubu administration.
He noted that government funding through the MTF would deepen ongoing vaccination initiatives, including the rollout of the HPV vaccine, which he said had already reached millions of girls nationwide.
“For instance, the HPV campaign has seen over 40 million Nigerian children immunised,” he said.
He further disclosed that the combined measles–rubella vaccination campaign, which reached nearly 30 million children, will be scaled up in the coming year.
Salako reaffirmed the administration’s determination to implement policies that directly improve the well-being and quality of life of Nigerians.
