Nandap Vows Tougher Border Security After Killing of Immigration Officers

 

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nanna Nandap, has reaffirmed the resolve of the service to strengthen border operations in the wake of the killing of three personnel by suspected bandits in Kebbi State.

Nandap gave the assurance on Thursday during a condolence visit to the Kebbi State Government in Birnin Kebbi, where she lamented the tragic loss but maintained that the attack would not dampen the morale of the service.

“It is with deep respect and sober reflection that we gather here today,” the CG said. “Our fallen officers were dedicated professionals—brothers, fathers and sons—who worked tirelessly to safeguard our borders and maintain peace in this strategic state.”

Describing Kebbi as both a gateway for trade and a zone vulnerable to criminal infiltration, Nandap noted that the state’s location demands heightened vigilance and collaboration with host communities.

She stressed that despite the recent setback, the NIS remains “strong, resilient and unwavering” in its mandate to secure the nation’s frontiers.

Nandap also commended the Kebbi State Government for its cooperation with security agencies and called for sustained community sensitisation to curb irregular migration and criminal activities along the border corridors.

Responding, Governor Nasir Idris—represented by Deputy Governor Abubakar Umar-Tafida—extended condolences to the NIS, describing the deceased officers as “gallant men who died in active service.”

The governor disclosed that the incident had prompted fresh security assessments, including a review of existing checkpoints. He proposed joint security checkpoints as a stronger deterrent to criminal networks operating along border routes.

“With this unfortunate development, there is a need to rethink the number and structure of our checkpoints. Joint operations will reinforce our security response,” he said.

He assured Nandap of the state government’s continued support for the NIS and other security agencies, highlighting ongoing engagements with religious leaders to sustain peace and stability.

The three NIS personnel were killed on November 27 when terrorists attacked their camp at the Bakin Ruwa Checkpoint under the TUGA Border Patrol Formation in Bagudo Local Government Area.
