Adamawa Assembly Calls for Suspension of Madagali Council Chairman Over School Closures

The Adamawa State House of Assembly on Monday urged Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to suspend the Executive Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, Simon Sashi, following allegations that he ordered the closure of public schools without consulting relevant authorities.

Madagali, the hometown of Governor Fintiri, has in recent times experienced heightened security challenges, including attacks on schools and abductions of students. Last weekend, the Governor had reassured the public that the state government had not ordered any school closures despite the prevailing insecurity.

However, Adamawa lawmakers expressed concern over Sashi’s unilateral action. At Monday’s plenary, they recommended his suspension for one month, pending the outcome of an investigation to be conducted by the Assembly’s joint committees on Education and Local Government Affairs.

The motion for suspension was moved by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Kate Mamuno, and after deliberations, the Speaker, Bathiya Wesley, directed the Assembly clerk to formally communicate the recommendation to Governor Fintiri.

Madagali remains one of the local government areas most vulnerable to attacks by insurgents, particularly Boko Haram, raising fears about the safety of students and teachers in the area.

The Assembly’s decision underscores the state lawmakers’ commitment to due process and proper consultation in handling security-related decisions affecting public institutions.
